Robert Zollitsch, widely known in the Chinese-speaking world by his artist name Lao Luo (老锣), is a German composer and music producer who stands as a foundational and leading pioneer of New Chinese Art Music (中国新艺术音乐). Born in Munich, Germany, in 1966, he grew up immersed in Bavarian folk music traditions and developed a profound connection to acoustic string instruments from an early age by learning to play the Bavarian zither.
He pursued his formal musical education from 1986 to 1990 at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. In 1993, a prestigious DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship allowed him to transition to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Under the guidance of the legendary master Gong Yi, he embarked on an in-depth study of traditional Chinese music and the guqin (the ancient seven-stringed scholar’s lute).
Over more than three decades, Lao Luo has synthesized his deep knowledge of European compositional architecture with Chinese acoustic systems, developing a distinctive musical voice that transcends cultural and stylistic boundaries. Rather than reducing non-Western instruments to superficial decoration within a standard Western orchestra, his compositions are rooted directly in the core structural essence of Chinese music, pushing the boundaries of contemporary innovation. This approach has led Chinese audiences to describe his works as “profoundly Chinese, yet with an exceptionally novel, modern touch.”
Lao Luo’s musical philosophy places equal emphasis on uncompromising artistic quality, structured methodology, and a vital sense of humor. He maintains that for Chinese art music to achieve true international structural standing, it must discover and cultivate its own authentic linguistic and tonal voice rather than merely copying Western formats.
